There has been a lot of going on between every people’s lives. And because of that many of us have been directed to the wrong path. One of that is by being incarcerated because of some certain criminal acts.
This has certain psychological effects on the person who has been locked up because of conviction from crimes he or she may have committed. After years of being in jail, one has to cope and process the experience that was brought about from such incarceration.
One way of dealing with that is by getting into sober living houses or also known as halfway house. Although there have been a lot of misconceptions when it comes to these kinds of facilities, this, however, did not prevent them to provide the care and support that these people need.
A sober living home serves as an intermediary between an inpatient facility catering persons who have been incarcerated and then preparing them on how to reconnect with the real world.
The current and more sensible view of sober houses has been more profound. This is because sober houses these days are already being owned by third parties which are separate and distinct from the treatment centers.
They serve as a backup for the recently discharged persons from its protection from the treatment and to the real world.
Now, halfway houses are also catering to those who are newly recovering from substance addiction and alcoholics.
And because it is a facility that promotes rehabilitation, these halfway houses put in different sets of house rules, and of course, belonging to those rules are the prohibition from the use of drugs and alcohol, the strict implementation of curfew house, and also on gaining employment.
With the rehabilitation of these persons comes with it the random drug testing as well as being breathalyzed to be able to monitor the progress and their commitment to sober living.
These rules that are being imposed upon them are not to punish them but to give them the aid to help them refrain from engaging from their old ways and making them appreciate living in the real world without having to resort to the activities that had brought them to these sober living homes.
These sober living homes are usually independent and distinct from any government agency because of the lack of government funding.
The people in sober houses have to pay rent to stay in these homes and the owner of these sober living homes carries the sole responsibility for the facilities’ upkeep and maintenance.

The main philosophy that is practiced in these sober houses is the 12-step program to recovery which aims to overcome a person’s dependency against any vices. In accordance with the 12-step program to recovery is the mandated active participation and attendance as they journey towards the road to recovery.
So if you are already considering in admitting yourself into a sober living house, here are some of the things which you can expect:
1. As to surroundings
If you haven’t been into a sober house, then someone with a firsthand experience might be able to give you a better understanding of how it is really like to be admitted to such a facility.
There might be a point in your stay where you will question why you did such or that you want to escape from being admitted there, but you must be able to look at the bigger picture, that you are there because you needed help and the people who have taken you are there to help you get through your troubles.
Sober houses are mostly built for the comfort of those who are currently living there. This is to give them the fresh air, and the peace that they need to be able to reflect on themselves and be for them to be able to strengthen their gusto to reach sobriety.
These sober living homes are mostly gender-specific which is good because this creates a more comprehensive approach to a person’s sobriety given that the added comfort especially for some who are not comfortable in homes who caters to opposite genders.
This enables the handler to easily facilitate the program because the population is of the same genus.
Although this might not be a factor to some, it should be taken into consideration that the separation of gender has been already thought of by the handlers of these sober living homes.
2. As to effectivity
Practically, the success rate of being able to fully observe the programs given by these sober living homes are not always 100%.
There will be some who will go into relapse and again find themselves in the confines of sober houses once again.
In determining what sober house is best for you, you must be able to assess yourself first, on how committed you are towards sobriety and how much help do you need for you to be able to attain the purpose of seeking help by admitting yourself into a sober living home.
Every sober living homes may have the same set of programs to recovery, but each of which has a different manner or a different approach to how they will implement the steps for a person’s sobriety.
There will be different levels of tests, some of those are even encountered even during off sessions. The psychological effect of withdrawal, and the painstaking urge to abstain from your previous dependency be it on substance, or alcohol or any other cause will always come to get you.
This is one point where the person will have to ask how much determination he or she has to escape addiction.
The effectivity will depend more on your determination because no matter how great a sober living home facilitates and implements recovery programs, these can still become inutile if there is no willingness to change on the other person’s part.
The road to sobriety is indeed long and hard. But one must be able to understand that if you want to change your life for good, then do not be ashamed of trying to seek help because not all of our addictions and bad habits can self-heal.
