History of hair removal

Some proof shows body hair removal was a thing back in the ancient Egyptian days. Egyptians used to follow many beauty rituals and body hair removal was one of them. They not only removed their body hair but also removed the hair on their head as well.

Egyptian women removed their body hair using tweezers made from seashells, pumice stones and moved to beeswax and sugar wax.

The same goes for Roman women, being hairless on the body was considered to be a statement of class in society.

Then, later on, hair removal on the face, such as the eyebrows and forehead to enhance beauty, became popular. During the late 18th-century razor was invented which was used by both men and women.

In the ’90s many hair removal methods were introduced which includes special razors for women, electric razors, hair-removing creams, wax strips, and electrolysis methods.

Popular hair removal methods

Epilating

This is one of the best root hair-removing methods. It’s a little painful when compared to other methods but gives the best and long-lasting results. It may take up to four weeks for regrowth of hair with epilating since the hair is removed from the roots. This also helps to reduce the problem of ingrown hair. You can use an epilator for your body hair and a tweezer for shaping your eyebrows.

Shaving

The oldest and fastest method of hair removal. It is still widely used by both males and females. There are different types of shaving tools available for the face and body.

Waxing

This is also one of the oldest hair removing methods. The two types of waxing methods are hot waxing and cold waxing. Both prevent hair growth for up to many weeks. But it’s one of the most painful methods of hair removal.

Depilatory creams

Also known as hair removal creams is the most painless way to remove your face and body hair. These creams have chemicals that dissolve the hair on the surface of the skin. When applied, it takes a few minutes to work, and then you can simply wipe away the cream.

But depilatory creams can cause irritation and inflammation for a few. Especially if you have sensitive skin.

Electrolysis

This method can be painful and dangerous if it’s not done by trained professionals. In this method, they insert super fine needles into the hair follicle and send an electric current that kills the hair follicle.

There are two methods in electrolysis: Galvanic hair removal and thermolytic hair removal. The galvanic method removes the hair follicles chemically and the thermolytic method removes the hair follicle using heat.

Laser hair removal

With all these previously mentioned methods hair grows back again in no time. With the growing technology, they come up with so many techniques and treatments for all our needs. And laser hair removal is one of them.

It uses pulses of light to destroy the hair follicle. It is done by targeting the pigment in the hair. This technique is also popular in India. There are many clinics for laser hair removal in cities like Pune.

Pros of Laser hair removal

  • Even though laser hair removal doesn’t remove the hair permanently, it is proven that it drastically reduces hair growth.
  • Laser hair removal can be done on any part of the body including the face. And it can be done fast as the machine can cover large portions easily.
  • When it comes to pain level it is far less than waxing. And with the right preparation, the pain can be reduced.

Cons of Laser hair removal

  • You need to take multiple sessions to remove the hair which is a long process. It may take up to four to eight sessions depending on your hair type and growth.
  • It is extremely costly. When compared to the amount you spend on other methods of hair removal, laser treatment can be pricey. And you should also be careful post-treatment and take immense care of your skin from sun and UV rays. In short, laser hair removal is a beauty investment.
  • It is not permanent. Yes! It is the truth. Laser hair removal can only reduce hair growth in certain areas and it is not a permanent method to remove the hair.
